Head of the Charles Regatta is held.

October 16, 1965

The course extends three miles up river from the Boston University Bridge. The rowing competition is founded by Cambridge Boat Club members D’Arcy MacMahon, Howard McIntyre, and Jack Vincent at the suggestion of then-Harvard and later Northeastern rowing coach Ernie Arlett. The annual event expands to a two-day competition in 1997, and subsequently becomes the largest international rowing event in the world, attracting more than 11,000 rowers from 28 countries and as many as 400,000 spectators.
